How Tenochtitlan became Mexico City

In 1325 Tenochtitlan was founded by the Mexicas. TENOCHTITLAN

The Mexicas established themselves on a small island of the western side of Lake Texcoco, which they called Tenochtitlan. The city grew in size and strength and eventually dominated the other city states around the lake Texcoco. By the time the Spaniards arrived, the Aztec Empire reached much of Mesoamerica.

Lake TexcocoIn 1519 the Spaniards arrived in Tenochtitlan. Their leader, Hernan Cortes learned about the political problems of the Aztecs and took advantage of the situation to conquer Tenochtitlan. The timing of the arrival of the Spaniards was of great influence on the defeat of the Aztecs. Moctezuma, the Aztec Emperor thought that Hernan Cortes was Quetzalcoatl, the returning god and welcomed the Spaniards to the city.  Moctezuma was later their prisoner and died in 1520.

The Aztecs tried to defend their city against the Spaniards and their allias, the Tlaxcalans, but their efforts were in vain. Cuauhtemoc, the last Aztec Emperor, and now considered a national hero, led the defense of the city.  He was later tortured and executed.

The Spaniards took over Tenochtitlan on the 15th of August 1521, and built over the ruins what is now Mexico City, the capital of the New Spain.
